NAMI Honors WBFO Mental Health Initiative
On May 3, 2018, the Buffalo and Erie County Chapter of National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) awarded its President's Award to WBFO in honor of the station's Mental Health Initiative. The two-year project, funded by the Lee Foundation, provides in-depth coverage of the mental health issues, including the discrimination faced by people with mental illness. The project will feature radio reports, online videos and Facebook live events. Receiving the award on behalf of WBFO was Dave Rosenthal, Senior Director, News and Public Affairs.
An Advisory Council was formed to provide guidance throughout the project. Members of the Advisory Council include: Michael Cummings, Associate Medical Director at ECMC; Howard Hitzel, CEO of BestSelf Behavioral Health; Jessica Pirro, CEO Crisis Services; and Karl Shallowhorn, Director at Therapy Live.
